Hazardous Materials

Hazardous material releases can take many forms, including a chemical that has spilled, a leaking cylinder, or a gas leak from a car or building for the purposes of this section).  The response to these types of situations may vary depending on the material.  The most important thing to remember is avoid the area and contact emergency personnel.  Below is a list of general response actions to consider.

  • Review the location specific emergency plan if in place.

  • Do not attempt to clean up the spill or leak unless trained to do so.

  • Evacuate the immediate area as necessary.

    • If there is a FIRE, activate the fire alarm as you exit the building.

    • If the release is located in a lab with an emergency air purge, activate the system by pressing the button.

    • Do not activate the fire alarm system for a gas leak unless instructed to do so by emergency personnel.

  • Notify emergency personnel by contact University Police (828-262-8000) or 911.  Provide location, identify of chemical/source, amount released, injuries, contact information, and any additional information you feel is important to share.

  • Follow the instructions of emergency personnel.

  • Wait in a safe location away from the area until instructed to return by emergency personnel.
